Overview
Created in memory of Columbus resident Susan M. Cochran and her dedication to studies of the great American author William Faulkner, the Susan M. Cochran Memorial Endowment for Faulkner Studies provides scholarship funding for high-achieving students majoring in English at Columbus State University to pursue their education in literary studies. This merit-based scholarship is $1,000 per year renewable for up to four years and includes an additional travel grant of up to $1,000 to attend the University of Mississippi’s annual Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference in Oxford.

Eligibility  Selection Criteria
In order to be considered for the scholarships, applicants must

  • Be an incoming student at Columbus State University
  • Declare a major in English
  • Sign a letter of intent to meet all requirements of the scholarship

Requirements for Renewal
In order to be considered for a scholarship renewal, awardees must

  • Maintain a 3.0 grade point average. Continue to pursue a degree in English
  • Enroll in a seminar or directed study course on Faulkner with CSU faculty member by or during third year of study
  • Attend Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference in Oxford by or during the third year of study

McGlaun Scholarship

Used for student travel by those English majors presenting papers at academic conferences or other relevant academic travel.

Used by English majors who are studying abroad to purchase books.

Faculty Loudermilk Grant

The Loudermilk Grant awards money to support the professional growth of faculty. Money is set aside specifically for members of the English department. If you have a research or teaching project for which you would like to apply, please send a proposal to Dr. K. Seon Jeon by October 16, 2020. Your proposal should explain what that project is, how much money is required, and how that money will be spent. There is no specific application form for this. Your email will serve as your application. The grant favors proposals that will lead to scholarly publication, course development, or the revision of an existing course. The English Department's Scholarship and Awards Committee will review the proposals and make its decision by the beginning of November, 2020.

The deadline to apply for Spring 2021, is February 26, 2021.
