Department of English

About the Department

As the foundation for so many career paths, the study of English is the creative core of higher education. At CSU, you’ll develop critical thinking, reading, writing, and language skills that support a lifelong love of learning.

With a firm foundation in English, you can pursue a career in teaching, journalism, or creative writing, or prepare for the broader study of law, business, or medicine. English majors often work toward graduate degrees in rhetoric, technical communication, and creative writing. See what our graduates are doing via the CSU English YouTube channel.

As a student of English at CSU, your education will be immersive and hands-on. Publish your work in peer-reviewed journals, present at national conferences, conduct independent research projects, and study in inspirational locations around the world.

Brandi Ford

Studying abroad in Ecuador was one of the best experiences I had while at CSU. After graduation, I was offered and accepted a job teaching English III and IV for Union County Public Schools in North Carolina. Because of my previous study abroad experience, I applied for a program that sends teachers to China during the summer to teach English as a second language. In the summer of 2016, I was chosen to accompany a team of the best teachers in the county to visit and teach in Nanjing, China, allowing me to earn the status of an international teacher. Studying and teaching abroad has expanded my horizons and afforded me unparalleled opportunities.
